Which versions of OpenWRT custom firmware are available for D-Link DIR 615 router
It was quite a while that D-Link updated their firmware for D-Link DIR 615 E4. The stock firmware might be confusing for some or lacking some features that can be found only in custom firmware. In this post we’ll be flashing it with OpenWRT.

Latest version that is supported by the Router is 15.05.1 (Chaos Calmer). The problem with this version is that it lacks WiFi support for D-Link DIR 615 E4. If you need the WiFi, you can install older version: 14.07 (Barrier Breaker).

Where to download OpenWRT firmware versions for the DIR 615
. Open Download OpenWRT page for version 15.05.1
. Search for
Brand: D-link
Model: DIR-615
Version: E
. Download the file from “Firmware OpenWrt Install URL” that called “openwrt-15.05.1-ar71xx-generic-dir-615-e4-squashfs-factory.bin”
. To Download 14.07 – go to OpenWRT Archive page.
. Download the file with name “dir-615-e4-squashfs-factory.bin”

. After you downloaded the BIN file – follow our guide to flash D-Link DIR 615 E4 with firmware.
. Goto:
192.168.1.1
*** OpenWRT is configured to that IP instead of stock 192.168.0.1
. [Login] with username “root” and empty password
. Don’t forget to reset your username and password for security.

Latest release of OpenWRT (for D-Link DIR 615 E4) as of time of this writing was in March 2016 and was not containing WiFi. For security reasons we would recommend flashing D-Link DIR 615 E4 with DD-WRT custom firmware. Latest version of DD-WRT for this router is from October 2018.
